Where to eat in Ubud?

If you plan a trip to Ubud, Bali, or if you are already there, most probably you will be surprised by the numerous restaurants that you can find here. From traditional food like Gado-Gado and up to western food like italian pizza, in Ubud you will find anything you want.
One of the things I appreciated most in Ubud was the fact that they are a lot into healthy food. So, it doesn’ matter if you are omnivore and want to eat chicken meat, or if you are vegetarian or even raw vegan, Ubud is the city that has them all, especially because of the high number of tourists that choose to spend their holidays in Bali.

Fruits market

For me, one of the best places where I use to do the shopping and eat, was the market. You can find there fruits, vegetables and fresh juices, all at very good prices. But sometimes, I was feeling that I need something different, I missed other tastes, so then I chose to go to restaurants. But, with so many options of terraces, restaurants, bars  and coffee shops which try to attarct their clients through different decorations and mottos like „eat well, sleep well”, it wasn’t quite easy to choose.
From all the place where I ate and drank coffee/fresh juices, you have here 5 of them which were my favourite and to which I would return anytime:
  1. Anomali Coffee

I will start the list with Anomali Coffee, because this coffee shop was a kind of morning shower to me, everyday. The 10 days that I spent in Ubud started with a delicious cappuccino.

Anomali Coffee Shop

It is a lovely space with an open view to the street. The coffee shop is nice decorated with regular and high chairs and there is also a relaxing spot with pillows and on the terrace you can find some interesting seats made out of metallic barrels.
Beside coffee, they have a few lovely pastries.
If you are the type of person that wakes up better after drinking a coffee, then I recommend you to try Anomali Coffee in Ubud.
  1. Who’s Who

Who’s who?

At first, the restaurant’s name captured my attention. Then, to find it I had to go off about 50-80 m from the main street.
It is a belgian restaurant which had only three tables in the beggining. As you can see from the photo, the restaurant is in a continous evolution, but their principle is to raise the quality of the food, rather than add tables.

Mushroom Salad

We tasted Mushroom Salad (mushrooms, mozarella, garlic, anchovy dressing) and Subtle Belgian Style Curry with zucchini, egg plant, carrot, coco cream and cilantro. And don’t miss the Apple, their signature dessert containing apples, vanilla ice-cream, toffee and cinnamon.
Who’s who is a perfect place if you want to sit in a quiet place, but in the same to taste some very good dishes.
      3.Taco House
For me, Taco House was the first time eating mexican food. And I have to admit that I loved it! They have a lot of dishes, suitable for both vegetarians and omnivores and they have some amazing fresh juices. We had a great fresh juice made from mint, lime, orange and ginger.

Fresh juice at Taco Casa

The first thing that drew my attention at their place is that they strictly respect the non smoking rule, even it the place is an open terrace with an open kitchen. Most of the products are made in house, like chilli sauce,  corn chips, flour tortilla, crispy taco shell, etc.
We chose to eat Cheesy Enchiladas (grilled marinated veggies rolled wioth fresh home made tortilla, smoothered with home made enchiladas saucce and topped with cheddar cheese, served with black beans, guacamole and sour cream) and Fiesta Salad (fresh shredded roman lettuce, carrot, red cabbage, beans, sweet corn, salsa, red and green pepper, onion, cilantro, black olives, cheddar cheese, home made corn chips ans served with honey vinaigrette on the side).

Taco House was nominated a lot of prizes by Tripadvisor, prizes which they trully deserve. If you are in Ubud, don’t forget aboutt them.
  1. Cafe Beras

Situated on a quiet street in Ubud, Cafe Beras is a must visit. It is a special place not only for their good food,  but also for the relaxing atmosphere. It has a cosy, traditional Balinese feel and the staff will make you feel right at home.
We tasted the hummus and Gado-Gado, a deliciously comforting Indonesian mega salad served with crunchy prawn crackers and an incredibly delicious peanut dressing. Its ingredients are: assorted vegetables, tofu, eggs, and shrimp chips are dressed in peanut sauce.

I urge you to check this place out if you get time. It’s located within a 5 minute walk of the centre and you don’t get to hear any of the noise!
  1. Swasti Eco Cottages

I think we all have a place of which we fell in love at first sight. For me, that place was Swasti Eco Cottages, and I felt in love with it even before tasting their food. It’s that place that made me feel like home, surrounded by nature, fresh air, animals and colors. Their terrace is very colourfull and arranged with gtood tase that gives good vibes, being a contrast between wood and colors. The organic veggies from the garden are used in their dishes and they strive to provide the best cuisine, focusing on achieving the right balance of nutrition and deliciousness.

Swasti Cottage

We tasted their food and we can truly agree that they are mastering this balance of nutrition and deliciousness mentioned above. We had two dishes: Beloved Burrito (the vegetarian option), containing organic tempe, black bean, pumpkin, red paprika, onion, garlic, emmenthaler, served with guacamole; Quesadillas (vegetarian option), containing basil pesto, sundried tomato, olives, feta, served with guacamole, cashew sour cream and fresh dice tomatoes. All these accompanied by two fresh juices.
